A Paradigm Shift in Respiratory Care

Can you hear it? It’s the new sound of the Vibralung® Acoustical Percussor, and it’s starting a revolution in Airway Clearance Therapy (ACT) for patients with mucus-producing lung disease and difficulty in clearing secretions. 

The Vibralung Acoustical Percussor applies vibratory sound waves, during inspiration and exhalation, over a wide range of frequencies (~5 to 1,200 Hz) to vibrate the column of gas in the tracheobronchial tract. As a result, mucus is loosened and separated throughout the airways, by the principle ofsympathetic resonance, to promote safe, effective and gentle ACT like no other alternative.

The Gentler Approach to ACT

The Vibralung Acoustical Percussor is a gentler form of ACT than oscillatory PEP devices, or those that make contact with the external chest wall. It may be especially useful for ACT in some conditions where other means, like vests and hand-held percussors, simply cannot be used, such as with patients that have chest wall injuries, burns, fresh surgical wounds, or injured/broken ribs. It is the ideal choice wherever airway clearance is the goal and patient comfort is preferred.


Intended Use

The Vibralung Acoustical Percussor is intended for use in the hospital or at home for patients with respiratory diseases and related conditions that involve increased mucus production, infection and inspissation of secretions, and defective mucociliary clearance.

These conditions are typical in patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, ciliary dyskinesia syndromes, asthma, muscular dystrophy, post-operative atelectasis plus neuromuscular respiratory impairments, thoracic bellows defects, and any other cardiorespiratory or neuromuscular diseases that inhibit effective cough, mucokinesis, airway clearance and expectoration.

Acoustical energy (sound waves) is coupled directly to the patient’s airway through a unique Hand-held Transducer (HHT) that contains a small high-fidelity loudspeaker. The HHT connects to the Treatment Control Unit (TCU) via a cable. The TCU can be held by the patient, positioned on a nearby table or even pole-mounted. The lightweight HHT (approximately one-half pound) is ergonomically designed for easy handling by patients of all ages.

The disposable Patient Kit contains a waveguide Y-adapter with inspiratory valve, mouthpiece, and Variable Expiratory Resistor that allows Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) to be applied during therapy.


Principles of Operation

The Vibralung Acoustical Percussor generates sound waves between 5 and approximately 1,200 Hz, configured as either “random noise” or programmed, sequenced bursts of quasi-musical tones that increase across their frequency range during a 10-minute treatment session.


Sound waves generated by the Vibralung Acoustical Percussor travel into the lung during both inspiration and exhalation. Depending on their frequency, the waves are superimposed over regular respiratory waveforms to reach airways of all sizes. Acoustical airway clearance works …
